Box truck loads: where they come from and how we book yours

01The freight ladder
Where box truck loads come from, steadiest first
Most owners start at the bottom rung and climb. Open a rung to see how it pays, who gets in and the catch.
1Contracts and direct shipperssteadinessNew MC: Rarely
How it works
A manufacturer, distributor or retailer with regular freight hires you directly or through a dedicated route.
How it pays
Weekly, per route or per stop. Lower highs, far fewer empty days.
The catch
Takes time, insurance history and references. Often needs a liftgate and a set schedule.
New MC: Rarely
2Repeat broker lanessteadinessNew MC: After a few good loads
How it works
Brokers with steady box truck freight call the carriers who delivered on time last time. One good load becomes a weekly lane.
How it pays
Per load, negotiated. Usually better than a cold board posting because they already trust you.
The catch
You earn it load by load. One missed pickup can end it.
New MC: After a few good loads
3Final mile and delivery programssteadinessNew MC: Some programs
How it works
Retail, furniture and appliance delivery networks contract box trucks for daily routes, often with a liftgate.
How it pays
Per stop or per day. Predictable, but the program sets the rate.
The catch
Uniform, equipment and insurance rules, and the program controls your schedule.
New MC: Some programs
4Expedite networkssteadinessNew MC: Sometimes
How it works
Time-critical partials, often hot parts, that need a truck now. Networks and brokers blast the load to nearby trucks.
How it pays
Strong per mile when it hits, then nothing for a day or two.
The catch
You must answer in minutes and run at odd hours. Bursty.
New MC: Sometimes
5Load boardssteadinessNew MC: Yes, the main door in
How it works
Brokers post partials and LTL loads by equipment type. You call or bid. Most box truck freight anyone can see lives here.
How it pays
Per load, posted low and meant to be negotiated.
The catch
Every box truck in the area sees the same post. The good ones go in minutes.
New MC: Yes, the main door in
02New authority
How to get your first loads on a new MC
The first month is the hardest. Fewer brokers will take you, and the ones that will want to see you deliver. Here is the order that works.
- 1Get every document right firstActive MC and USDOT, certificate of insurance, W-9, and your authority letter. Brokers reject packets for a mismatched business name.
- 2Target brokers that onboard new MCsMany brokers want 6 to 12 months of authority history. Some do not. Ask before you fill a packet, not after.
- 3Take short, clean loads firstLocal and short regional partials with easy appointments build a delivery record fast.
- 4Know your minimum before you callA load that does not cover your cost per mile is not experience; it is a loss with paperwork.
- 5Deliver on time and send the POD the same hourThat is how a one-time load becomes a repeat lane.
03Distance
Local vs regional vs long-haul box truck loads
| Local | Regional | Long haul | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical distance | Under 150 mi | 150-500 mi | 500 mi and up |
| How it is priced | Flat per load or per stop | Per load, quoted with miles | Per mile, then negotiated |
| Home time | Home every night | Home most nights or weekends | Out several days |
| Truck that fits | 26 ft, liftgate helps a lot | 26 ft, dock-high or liftgate | 26 ft, sleeper helps |
| Watch out for | Low pay per load; many stops and waiting | Reload planning decides the week | Deadhead home and hours of service |
Distance bands are rules of thumb from how loads are usually posted, not official categories.

Questions about finding loads
How do I get loads for a box truck?
Start with an active MC and clean broker paperwork, then work load boards for partial and LTL freight, call the brokers who post box truck loads in your area, and build repeat lanes by delivering on time. Over time add direct shippers or a contract. Or have a dispatcher do the searching and negotiating while you drive.
How do I book loads for box trucks?
Find the load, call or message the broker, confirm the equipment, weight, pickup window and pay, then send your carrier packet if you are new to that broker. The broker sends a rate confirmation; read it, sign it, and the load is booked. With us, we do every step except the yes.
Can a new MC get box truck loads?
Yes, but expect fewer options at first. Some brokers will not use a carrier under 6 or 12 months old. Focus on brokers that onboard new authorities, short regional runs and on-time delivery to build history.
What freight do box trucks haul?
Mostly partials and LTL: palletized retail and e-commerce freight, food and beverage, appliances and furniture, trade show materials and expedited parts. Freight that is light for the space and needs a smaller truck or a liftgate.
How do I find box truck loads near me?
Filter your load board by origin radius and straight or box truck equipment, and call brokers with offices in your metro. Local shippers and delivery programs are worth a direct visit. A dispatcher can watch your area all day so you see the good ones first.
Why do posted loads go so fast?
Because every box truck nearby sees the same post, and brokers book the first carrier that confirms. Speed matters, but so does knowing your number so you don't grab a cheap one just to be first.
