BNo CDL needed
Non-CDL box truck loads, legal and booked
Dispatch for non-CDL box truck loads: we book freight that keeps your truck at or under 26,000 lb, every load, and we keep it moving. Below is exactly who counts as non-CDL, where the freight comes from and how we check weight before anything is booked.
Check your door jamb
The GVWR on this label decides your license, not the box length. 26,000 lb or less and no placarded hazmat: no CDL.
01The rule
Who counts as non-CDL
Updated October 2026. Checked against 49 CFR 383.5 and 383.91.
Federal rules require a Class B CDL for a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating or actual gross weight of 26,001 lb or more, whichever is greater. A box truck can run non-CDL when all of these are true:
- The GVWR on the door-jamb label is 26,000 lb or less
- The truck, cargo, fuel and driver weigh 26,000 lb or less on the scale
- It is not hauling hazardous materials that require placards (that needs a CDL in any size truck)
- It is not towing a trailer that pushes the combination over the limits
The full answer, with trailers and air brakes, is in do you need a CDL to drive a box truck, or run your numbers in the CDL checker.
States can add their own rules for intrastate driving. General information, not legal advice.

04Weight
Staying under the weight limit on every load
Your real cargo limit is GVWR minus what the truck weighs ready to drive: full fuel, driver, pallet jack, straps. Weigh it once on a certified scale and keep the ticket. That number goes in your dispatch profile.
Then every load gets checked before we book it: posted weight against your limit, plus a cushion because shipper weights are often estimates. If a broker can't confirm the weight, we ask before you drive to the dock.

05Fee and setup
7% of gross, no CDL surcharge
Non-CDL trucks pay the same flat 7% of gross as every box truck, or 6% for 2+ trucks (limited-time). No setup fee, month-to-month, 30 days notice. Details on the pricing page.
Setup takes one call: we record your GVWR, scale weight, liftgate and lanes, then start broker packets. Here is how our onboarding works, or read about our box truck dispatch service as a whole.
Non-CDL questions
What is a non-CDL box truck?
A box truck with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 lb or less, so it can be driven without a commercial driver's license as long as it is not hauling placarded hazardous materials and stays at or under 26,000 lb actual weight. Most 26 ft box trucks are built at 26,000 lb GVWR for exactly this reason.
How do I get box truck loads non-CDL?
The same way as any box truck: load boards filtered for straight trucks, brokers that post box truck partials, final mile programs and local contracts. Your filter is weight. Only take loads where the cargo plus the truck stays under 26,000 lb. A dispatcher can check every load against your scale weight before booking.
Do brokers care if I don't have a CDL?
For most box truck freight, no. They care that the truck fits the load, the weight is legal, the insurance is right and you show up on time. Heavy or hazmat loads are the exceptions.
What happens if a load would put me over 26,000 lb?
We don't book it. Over 26,000 lb actual weight, the truck counts as a Group B commercial motor vehicle under 49 CFR 383.5, so a non-CDL driver would be driving illegally, and you would also be over the truck's rating.
Do you dispatch smaller non-CDL box trucks?
We dispatch 26 ft box trucks only, CDL and non-CDL, dry or refrigerated. Smaller box trucks are not part of our service.
