Best app for box truck loads: load and delivery apps compared
Search for the best app for box truck loads and you get two very different kinds of app mixed together. One kind shows you freight from brokers and shippers, and you price and book it like any carrier. The other kind is a delivery marketplace that hands you a job at a price it sets. Both can keep a 26 ft box truck moving, but they pay differently, want different paperwork and fit different weeks.
This guide sorts the truck load apps a 26 ft box truck owner will actually run into, with every requirement taken from the company's own page and dated. No rankings: we list what each app does and who it suits.
Four kinds of apps for box truck loads
| App type | Examples | How you get paid | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load board app | DAT One, Trucker Path, Direct Freight | The rate you negotiate with the broker, paid by the broker | Your own USDOT and MC, insurance, broker setup |
| Broker app | Apps run by large freight brokers | The rate on the broker's rate con | Approved carrier setup with that broker |
| Shipper program app | Amazon Relay | Amazon's posted price per load, paid weekly | Authority, insurance and safety rules set by Amazon |
| Delivery app | GoShare, Frayt | Per job, at the app's price, minus its share | The app's vehicle, insurance and background rules |
The first three are freight: you are the carrier and the money comes from a rate confirmation. The last is gig work: the app is your customer, and the price is mostly not up to you.
Load board apps
Load board apps are the phone side of a load board. You search for loads by origin, destination, equipment, length and weight, then call the broker and negotiate. For a 26 ft truck you filter for straight truck or box truck equipment and set a length of 26 ft and your real payload.
- DAT One. DAT's app for its load board. DAT says its board carries over 266 million loads a year and lists box truck loads as their own category. Paid plans start at $59 a month on DAT's pricing page; the higher tiers add rate data.
- Trucker Path. Best known as a parking and truck stop app, it also advertises a free load board and says about 150,000 loads are posted daily. The same app shows truck parking, weigh station status and truck restrictions, which is useful on its own.
- Direct Freight. Offers a free account with limited features and paid plans with more. Worth a look in regions where its listings are strong.
How to read these apps, plus free versus paid boards and fake-load warnings, is all in our guide to load boards for box trucks. The short version: an app is only as good as the freight posted in your lanes, so test it for a week where you run.
Broker apps
Large freight brokers run their own carrier apps and portals. Once you pass their carrier setup (authority, insurance certificate, W-9, sometimes a minimum authority age), you can see and often book their loads directly, track payments and send documents. They cost nothing.
The catch is the setup. A brand-new MC gets turned down by some brokers, and each broker app only shows that one broker's freight. Ten broker apps is ten setups. Our guide to freight brokers that work with box trucks covers how to get set up fast and how to check a broker before you haul for them.
Amazon Relay
Amazon Relay is Amazon's own load board for carriers. Its FAQ lists 26 ft box trucks with a tuck-under liftgate as accepted equipment and sets rules on authority age, safety rating and insurance. Loads are priced by Amazon and paid on a weekly cycle. Everything Amazon publishes about the program, including what it asks of box trucks, is in our Amazon Relay box truck guide.
Delivery apps that take 26 ft box trucks
Delivery and moving apps match you with a customer who needs something moved now. The app sets the price, takes its share and pays you out. Requirements vary a lot, and many gig apps are built for pickups and small vans, so the first check is whether a 26 ft truck qualifies at all.
| App | Box truck sizes it lists | Notable requirements on its page |
|---|---|---|
| Frayt | 12 to 26 ft box or straight truck | Driver 21 or older; for box trucks, at least $1,000,000 auto liability and $100,000 cargo liability, with the driver named on the policy; background check after document review |
| GoShare | Box trucks up to 26 ft | Vehicle age limits and its own insurance and document rules (see its vehicle page) |
| Curri | Its gig driver agreement covers vehicles of 10,000 lb or less | A 26 ft truck is over that line, so check its carrier and courier side instead |
Two things to notice. First, Frayt's box truck insurance minimums are the same numbers many freight brokers ask for, so a 26 ft truck already set up for freight usually meets them. Second, the weight line matters: an app whose gig agreement stops at 10,000 lb is not built for a 26,000 lb truck.
What delivery apps pay
Delivery apps pay per job, often with load and unload time, stops or distance built into the price. Most do not publish a full rate card, so the honest way to judge one is to log a week of offers and work out what each one paid per hour and per mile after fuel. Run any offer through the load profit calculator before you accept it.
Load apps vs delivery apps: which fits your truck
| If you want | Lean toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Regional loads and full days on the road | Load board and broker apps | Most box truck freight is partials and LTL posted by brokers |
| Home every night in one metro | Delivery apps, local broker freight | Short jobs, no overnight runs |
| Steady freight from one big shipper | Amazon Relay, broker dedicated lanes | Repeat lanes once you qualify |
| The highest rate per load | Load boards with negotiation | Posted rates are a starting point, not the final number |
| A new MC with no broker setups yet | Load boards, delivery apps that accept new carriers | Some brokers wait for authority age |
Our view from the dispatch desk: a 26 ft truck usually earns its keep on broker freight, because that is where the 8 to 12 pallet partials and the liftgate deliveries are posted. Delivery apps can fill a slow day close to home, but they rarely cover a truck payment on their own.
How to set up your apps in one afternoon
- Get your papers in one folder on your phone: MC and USDOT numbers, certificate of insurance, W-9, truck photos, door-jamb GVWR sticker.
- Install one load board app and set saved searches for your home market with equipment, 26 ft length and real payload.
- Complete setup packets with three to five brokers that post freight in your lanes, then install their apps.
- If you run Amazon freight, check Relay's current requirements against your authority age and safety record before applying.
- Add one delivery app that lists 26 ft trucks in your city, for slow days.
- Turn on push alerts, never browse while driving, and check offers at stops.
When an app is not enough
An app finds a posting. It does not call the broker, argue the rate up, check that the broker pays on time, plan your reload or chase a detention payment. That is the part that eats an owner's day, and it is what a dispatcher does. If you would rather drive while someone else works the phones, get a dispatcher for your box truck: we only dispatch 26 ft box trucks and we handle the calling, negotiating and paperwork on every load you approve. See how we source box truck loads for the details.
App details come from each company's own public pages as checked on the dates in the Sources list, and they change often. We have no partnership with any app named here. General information, not financial advice.
FAQ
What is the best app for box truck loads?
The one with the most paying freight in your lanes for your truck. For broker freight that usually means a load board app plus the apps of brokers you are set up with. For local per-job work it means a delivery app that accepts 26 ft trucks in your city. Test any app for a week in your own area before paying for it.
Are there free truck load apps?
Yes. Trucker Path advertises a free load board, Direct Freight offers a free account with limited features, and broker apps cost nothing once the broker has approved you as a carrier. Delivery apps are free to join but take their cut from each job.
Do delivery apps accept 26 ft box trucks?
Some do. Frayt lists 12 to 26 ft box and straight trucks, and GoShare lists box trucks up to 26 ft. Others cap gig drivers at vehicles of 10,000 lb or less, which rules out a 26 ft truck. Read the vehicle page of each app before you sign up.
Do I need my own MC authority to use load apps?
For load boards, broker apps and Amazon Relay, yes: brokers and Amazon contract with carriers that hold their own USDOT number and operating authority. Delivery apps set their own rules, but a 26 ft truck over 10,000 lb GVWR used for interstate commerce still needs a USDOT number under FMCSA rules.
Is an app better than a dispatcher?
An app shows you loads; it does not call the broker, push the rate, check the broker's credit or handle the paperwork. Many owners use both: apps for their own searching and a dispatcher to do the calling and negotiating on the loads that pay.
