Expedited box truck loads: how they work for a 26 ft truck
Expedited box truck loads are the freight that calls at 3 PM and has to be 400 miles away by morning. A plant is about to shut down a line for lack of parts, a retailer needs stock before a launch, or a machine is down until one crate arrives. Shippers pay for speed and for a truck that carries nothing else, and a 26 ft box truck is often the right size: more room than a small vehicle, faster to find than a 53 ft trailer.
This guide covers what counts as expedited, what brokers and shippers expect, how the pay works, and how to set up a box truck so it can actually win these loads.
What makes a load expedited
| Standard box truck load | Expedited box truck load | |
|---|---|---|
| Notice | A day or more | Minutes to a few hours |
| Route | May share the truck or stop on the way | Direct, pickup to delivery |
| Truck use | Partial or full | Usually exclusive to this shipment |
| Timing | Appointment windows | A deadline, often overnight or same day |
| Tracking | Check calls | Live tracking expected |
| Pay | Negotiated, often per load | Priced for speed, often by the mile |
Typical expedited freight for a 26 ft box: automotive and manufacturing parts, retail launch stock, medical and lab equipment that isn't temperature-controlled, trade show freight that missed its truck, and replacement parts for equipment that is down.
What brokers and shippers require
Requirements vary by broker, but expect most of these:
- Fast, accurate answers. Your truck's location, how soon you can load, and an honest ETA, given in minutes.
- Live tracking. An ELD or tracking app the broker can see. Many expedited loads are tracked minute by minute.
- A clean, empty truck ready to load, with straps, load bars or e-track to keep freight from shifting. Federal rules require cargo to be secured so it can't shift or fall (49 CFR 393.100); our load securement guide covers e-track and straps in a box.
- Insurance at the broker's limits. Federal minimum liability for for-hire general freight is $750,000 (49 CFR 387.9); brokers often ask for $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo.
- Hours available. A driver who has just finished a 13-hour day can't take a 400-mile overnight run. Know your remaining hours before you answer.
- Sometimes a team. For long runs with tight deadlines.
Solo or team
Federal hours of service decide what a solo driver can promise: at most 11 hours of driving within a 14-hour window after 10 hours off (49 CFR 395.3). A 600-mile overnight deadline is beyond one driver's limits. A team with a legal sleeper berth can keep the truck moving while one driver rests, using the sleeper berth provisions in 49 CFR 395.1(g). How team box truck runs work, and what they cost, is in our guide to OTR and team box truck runs.
Most expedited freight we see for 26 ft trucks is regional: a few hundred miles, inside one driver's day.
How expedited loads pay
Expedited loads are usually priced higher per mile than standard partials, because the shipper is buying speed and an exclusive truck. That is the upside. The downside is how they arrive: in bursts, at odd hours, and often to places with little freight back.
EXAMPLE: an expedited run, judged on the whole trip
Offer: 420 loaded miles, pick up in 2 hours, deliver by 7 AM. Rate: $1,350. Deadhead to pickup: 40 miles.
- Rate per loaded mile: $1,350 ÷ 420 = $3.21
- Rate per total mile with deadhead: $1,350 ÷ 460 = $2.93
- Fuel: 460 miles ÷ 9 mpg × $6.28 (EIA diesel, Oct 19, 2026) = $321
- Dispatch fee at 7%: $NaN
Now the part that matters: the delivery city. If the best reload is 150 empty miles away, the true rate on the round trip drops sharply. A slightly lower expedited rate into a busy freight market can be the better load.
All numbers except diesel are EXAMPLE figures, not market rates. Put any real offer through the load profit calculator before you say yes, and see what a dispatcher costs on top in the dispatch fee calculator.
Where expedited box truck loads come from
- Load boards. Brokers post urgent loads marked expedited, hot or team. They go fast; set alerts for your area. Our guide to load boards for box trucks covers filters and alerts.
- Broker direct offers. Once a broker knows your truck delivers on time, they call or text you first when something hot comes up. This is the steadiest source.
- Expedite networks and on-call shipper lists. Some shippers keep a short list of trucks they call for emergencies. You earn a spot by being reliable on the first few.
- Carriers that lease on trucks for expedite work. An option if you don't want your own authority, with their rules and pay terms.
How to stay ready for expedited freight
- Keep the truck clean, empty between loads, and stocked with straps, load bars and blankets.
- Keep your documents in one place: MC and USDOT, certificate of insurance, W-9, truck photos.
- Update your location with your dispatcher or the brokers you work with whenever you are empty.
- Know your hours. Check your remaining driving time before you answer any offer.
- Answer fast and honestly. A missed ETA on an expedited load costs you that broker.
- Plan the reload before you accept. The run is only as good as what comes after it.
How dispatch handles expedited loads
Expedited freight rewards whoever is watching when it posts. That is hard to do while driving, sleeping or loading. When our box truck dispatch service runs your truck, we watch for expedited posts in your area, confirm your position and hours, negotiate the rate, and check the delivery market for a reload before we send it to you. You still approve every load. For the rest of the freight we book, see how we find box truck loads.
FAQ
What are expedited box truck loads?
Shipments that cannot wait for a normal pickup window or an LTL network: a production line short on parts, a store missing stock for a launch, a replacement machine part. The truck is dispatched quickly and runs direct, usually as the only freight on board.
Do expedited loads pay more?
Usually more per mile than standard freight, because the shipper is paying for speed and an exclusive truck. But they arrive unpredictably and often leave you far from the next load, so judge them on what the whole trip pays, including the miles back.
Do I need a team for expedited box truck freight?
Not for most regional runs. Teams matter on long, tight-deadline loads where one driver's hours would run out before delivery. A solo driver can take expedited loads that fit inside 11 hours of driving and a 14-hour window.
How fast do I have to answer an expedited load offer?
Fast. These loads often go to the first qualified truck that answers with a confirmed position and ETA. Keep your phone on, your location updated and your documents ready, or have a dispatcher answering for you.
Can a new MC haul expedited loads?
Some brokers will use a new authority on expedited freight if the truck is close and the paperwork is clean. Others require months of history. Ask during setup rather than when a hot load is on the line.
