How much does a box truck cost?
How much is a box truck? It depends on size, new or used, the chassis under the box and the options on it, and prices move with the market. Instead of quoting a made-up average, this guide uses real dealer and used-truck listings we checked on October 21, 2026, explains what each option adds, and shows the total cost of owning a box truck, which is the number that actually decides whether a truck pays.
Listing prices are asking prices. They change daily and usually exclude taxes, title, registration and dealer fees.

Used box truck prices (listings checked Oct 21, 2026)
Used 26 ft trucks from large fleet sellers in one market (Georgia), all Freightliner M2 106:
| Year | Miles | Seller | Asking price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | 158,099 | Ryder Used Trucks | $48,244 |
| 2020 | 182,773 | Penske Used Trucks | $59,750 |
| 2018 | 256,373 | Independent dealer | $36,999 |
Used 24 ft trucks in the same market listed at $37,000 (279,534 miles) and $62,500 (126,021 miles). Mileage and condition move the price more than year.
Options that change the price
- Box length. The jump from 16 ft to 26 ft usually means a heavier medium-duty chassis, which is the biggest price step.
- Liftgate. Adds cost up front, opens much more freight. See box truck with liftgate.
- Refrigeration. The most expensive option. New 26 ft reefers with liftgates listed at about $165,000 to $170,000, against about $113,000 to $140,000 for dry 26 ft trucks.
- Sleeper. Usually an aftermarket build, and it may need a longer chassis.
- CDL vs non-CDL rating. A chassis rated over 26,000 lb can cost more and changes who can drive it.
- Body material. Aluminum, FRP and composite bodies differ in price, weight and durability.
- Fuel type. Gas and diesel chassis differ in price, fuel cost and maintenance.
Total cost of ownership
The sticker price is the smallest part of what a box truck costs over its life. A rough way to compare two trucks is the cost per month or per mile of everything it takes to run:
| Cost | How to estimate it |
|---|---|
| Truck payment or lease | From your financing offer |
| Insurance | From a real quote; see box truck insurance cost |
| Fuel | Miles ÷ MPG × fuel price |
| Maintenance and tires | Set aside a fixed amount per mile |
| Registration, permits, inspection | Annual, divided by 12 |
| Repairs | Older trucks need a bigger reserve |
| Resale value | What you can sell it for at the end |
EXAMPLE: new vs used 26 ft, rough monthly comparison
New 26 ft at $119,000, 20% down, 60 months at 8%: payment about $1,930. Low repair risk for the first years.
Used 26 ft at $48,000, 20% down, 48 months at 11%: payment about $990. Set aside an extra $400 a month for repairs on a high-mileage truck: about $1,390.
The used truck is about $540 a month cheaper on these assumptions, until a big repair. EXAMPLE numbers; run yours.
Fuel deserves its own line. At the U.S. average diesel price of $6.276 a gallon (EIA, week of October 19, 2026), a truck averaging 9 mpg costs about $0.70 a mile in fuel alone. Price your loads from your own cost per mile; see box truck rate per mile.
Buying checklist for a freight business
- GVWR on the door jamb. 26,000 lb or less if you want non-CDL.
- Inside box length and width, measured, not from the ad.
- Liftgate type and rated capacity, and that it works under load.
- Mileage and maintenance records. Ask for them; fleet trucks often have full records.
- Engine, transmission and brakes inspected by a mechanic you choose.
- Body condition: roof leaks, floor rot, door function, rust on the frame.
- Reefer unit hours and service history, if refrigerated.
- Title and liens clear before money changes hands.
- Your insurance quote on that exact VIN before you buy.
- The numbers: payment, insurance, fuel and maintenance against realistic loads. Use the box truck business profit calculator.
Buying is one line of your startup budget; the rest is in box truck business startup cost.
